Samsung Plans to Introduce Galaxy AI Features to the Galaxy A Series

Samsung introduced AI-powered tools under the title ‘Galaxy AI’ earlier this year exclusively on the Galaxy S24 series. Later, the brand expanded it to more eligible Galaxy S series devices with the One UI 6.1.1 update. The brand is looking forward to expanding the Galaxy AI to its midrange A-series phones.
Currently, Galaxy AI is available on several flagship Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy S23, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy S22, and more. But until yet, the Galaxy A series phone has yet to receive the Galaxy AI features.
A new report from research firm IDC shows the South Korean tech giant capturing the top position in the second quarter of 2024 with an 18.9% share of shipments. Galaxy AI is one of the key reasons behind this. After introducing the Galaxy AI on the Galaxy S24 series, the brand is looking forward to expanding the Galaxy AI to be on 200 million devices by the end of this year.
Samsung has also aggressively expanded compatibility with older devices, such as Galaxy A series devices, making Galaxy AI accessible to a wider audience. The brand differentiates between on-device and cloud-based AI features, with the former requiring less powerful hardware but being limited in complexity. Whereas cloud-based AI, while dependent on data connections, can handle more demanding tasks like image object erasure and generative AI.
“We are kind of investigating and looking into the possibility of expanding features to the A series as well. There are many factors that we need to consider, especially for on-device [AI] features; there are hardware constraints; and many other factors. So we are investigating it, and we will figure out what the right set of features is that we can deploy or expand to the A series. But nothing has been decided yet.” Park said.
Apart from hardware limitations, Samsung will consider market demand and competition while being more influential when introducing AI features on its mid-range devices, such as the Galaxy AI. Undoubtedly, the demand for AI is increasing in the market. Now Samsung is focusing on bringing Galaxy AI features to its A-series phones.
Regarding this, Park said, “We are also trying to make sure the experiences that we are providing are competitive enough, and to make that happen, we are working very closely with strategy partners, and that’s how we are making our solutions and features more competitive.”
